Do I think we have a vegan future?

I think so, it won’t happen quick enough, but I think it will happen. I’d almost rule out that it happens in my lifetime, but dramatic changes in the public consciousness sometimes happen faster than we think.

Do people care enough about animal suffering to stop it from happening?

I don’t think everyone needs to, only enough to move the public consciousness. The Pareto Principle? Marriage equality went from extremist to law quite quickly. “Only” 61% voted for Marriage equality, but that was enough.

I think it was the same with women’s suffrage and slavery, moral minority won the argument and caused a shift in the entire society.

There is the saying that the arc of history bends towards justice, I’m not sure I believe that is a given, but it does seem probable to me.

I also think it’s a useful strategy to be optimistic.

People don’t actively choose animals, it’s mostly just convenience. It was “convenient” to have slaves, then it wasn’t. That would’ve been a point at which some people weren’t convinced by the anti-slavery arguments but simply couldn’t stomach it being one of the last to keep slaves.

If we can get laws passed to prevent, or enough stigma surrounding animal cruelty, that’s enough.

It comes to purchasing products, I think it’s near impossible to make perfect calculations but I see it like this:

I’m a capitalist (w/ Regulations, safety net. UBI+), apparently unlike many(?) vegans who skew hard left into anarchism/communist territory.

I think the normalisation of veganism is part of the plan…an ever-increasing expansion of the vegan section in the supermarket

So I do purchase products from non-vegan companies to increase the demand for these products, which will further their introduction. I purchased from vegan-only companies as well, I don’t have a complicated calculation between these two, I’m sure a lot of it does come down to convenience as well.

But if hungry Jacks, Maccas, KFC and Nestle all eventually were fully vegan, that’s be a win for me.

But it would also be the minimum. Veganism is the minimum for me.

They would probably still have every other problem that they currently have, poor working conditions, low pay, etc, but they would no longer be contributing to animal ag. They would have a dark shameful past, but I don’t hold that against them, just as I don’t hold it against people who have a dark shameful past.
